July 29

Well, I began my travels heading west, so now I am going to end my travels going west.  (Wow, I've been all around the world!)  I have one more stop to make before arriving back home in Bellevue, Nebraska!

So clue #1 is I am heading west from Ohio

There are some famous people born in this state:
The 31st president of the United States

This film and television actress had a TV show named after her!

This famous baseball player was born in this state in 1918.  He played for the Cleveland Indians and was nicknamed "Bullet Bob".

The American Film Institute named this actor #13 among the Greatest Male Actors of All Time.  He was born in the state I am visiting.

This state's flag resembles the flag of France
Two more clues for you...

This is the only state whose east and west borders are 100% formed by water.
This is the only state name that starts with two vowels.

Today I have been in the great state of Ohio!  I visited the city of Canton, which is home to

In fact...that is exactly where I visited!

Here I am in Canton, Ohio at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Every year people from every state come to visit the Hall of Fame to remember the men who made professional football America's most popular sport. It opened in 1963 located in Canton because this is where the American Professional Football Association was founded and also because of the early day professional football champions the Canton Bulldogs. Inside the museum are so many wonderful things. To name a few; I saw bronze statues, historic to modern day football uniforms, and wonderful legendary Superbowl pictures. I also learned some amazing football history. Each summer they have a ten day Hall of Fame festival to celebrate the enshrinement ceremony and the first preseason game. I missed this year's but may try to come back next year to join in the fun.

I am heading north-east now...about 800 miles.  I'll travel on Interstate 70 most of the way.

This state was the "first" of many modern inventions
  • The first ambulance service
  • The first hot dog
  • The first traffic light
  • The first cash register
  • The first professional baseball team
  • The first police cars
The state's quarter's inscription reads "Birthplace of Aviation Pioneers." One of the first men to fly, Orville Wright, was born in here.

The first American to orbit the earth, John Glenn, was born in here.

The first man to walk on the moon, Neil Armstrong was born in here.

This is the only American state flag that is not a rectangle.

Where in the US is Flat Tammy?

I was able to visit a huge tourist town--Branson. In fact, Branson placed number three on the Top 10 Destinations list.

The population of the town is just 7,000 but there are more than 100,000 motel rooms, restaurant seats and theater seats!

Nearly 8 million people visit Branson every year!  Why do people visit Branson?  I'll show you...

This is The Hollywood Wax Museum!

So many great attractions!  I had a fantastic time!

Since I enjoyed the island of Roatan so much, I think I will head to another island.  So there's your first clue, I am heading to an island nation.

This country is just smaller than the state of Connecticut, 4, 411 square miles.  The island is 146 miles long and between 22 and 51 miles across.  This makes it the 3rd largest island in the Caribbean.

Orchids grow wild all over this island—200 species of them, 73 of which are found nowhere else. There are also 500 species of fern and 1,000 species of trees.

The national bird is the Doctor-Bird (Trochilus Polytmus) or Swallow-Tail Hummingbird.
Arawak Indians, the original inhabitants of this island, were exterminated by the Spanish.

Have you guessed where Flat Tammy is this week?  I had one person guess Nicaragua...but I told him that was not where I was.  He was close...I'm in the country NORTH of Nicaragua.  That's right--Honduras!  Actually I am on an island just off Honduras called Roatan.  Here is a map that shows you where the island is.

I went to Honduras with a family who do volunteer work at one of the local hospitals, Clinica Esperanza.  If you follow the link be sure to look in their "Gallery"--there are lots of great pictures!  Here are some pictures taken while I was there.

But it wasn't all work!  I got to go hiking...and then cool off in the ocean!

I am grateful I was able to visit Honduras, and especially to see the great work volunteers do to help people around the world!

I'm off on another adventure tomorrow, so be sure to check the clues and see if you can figure out, "Where in the World is Flat Tammy?"!!

July 8

Today I will share with you pictures from the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial.

I think the Lincoln Memorial was my favorite place to visit!

This is inscribed above Lincoln:
"IN THIS TEMPLE
AS IN THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE
FOR WHOM HE SAVED THE UNION
THE MEMORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN
IS ENSHRINED FOREVER
."

Here are a few facts I learned about the Lincoln Memorial:
  • They began the construction on the memorial on Abraham Lincoln's birthday, February 12, 1915--50 years after he died.
  • It took over 7 years to build.
  • The sculpture of Abraham Lincoln is 19 feet tall, sitting!  He was a tall man in real life, but not that tall!
  • The 36 enormous columns represent each of the states in the Union at the time of the President's death in 1865.
  • A picture of the Lincoln Memorial is featured on two pieces of the US currency.  Do you know which?  (Answer below)
I then walked over to the Jefferson Memorial
The design of the Jefferson memorial is similar to Monticello - Thomas Jefferson's home, which was modeled partially after the Pantheon in Rome.

The nineteen foot tall statue of Thomas Jefferson inside the monument was originally cast in plaster, due to metal being rationed because of World War II when the monument was built. Shortly after the war ended, the plaster statue was replaced with the bronze one that stands today.

They began building the memorial in 1939.  The memorial was dedicated in 1943 on the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth.

Answer:  A picture of the Lincoln Memorial is featured on the reverse side of the penny and the back of the American five-dollar bill.
